Face front, true believers! The latest issue of DAVID magazine is on the stands, and it features a senses-shattering interview with The Man himself, living legend Stan Lee!
OK, was that enough bombastic purple prose for you? So, yeah, I was approached by DAVID to interview Lee for its monthly “GRILL” feature, and thankfully, I managed to get five minutes on the phone with the ridiculously busy (even at 90 years old) Lee a day before my deadline. As you may recall, I previously interviewed Lee in slightly less rushed circumstances back in 2010, for a cover story in Vegas Seven tied into the release of Iron Man 2. One of those quirky things about writing about the same subject for different publications is that you’ll often ask the same questions, or at least similar ones. And Lee — much like other public figures such as Oscar Goodman — has been asked so many times about the same topics, he literally spits out answers almost verbatim. It’s not a bad thing, but it does make it a bit hard to get something different out of multiple interviews.
That said, even when pressed in between a video shoot and a sales pitch, Lee remains gracious, accommodating, funny and surprisingly humble, and it’s always a pleasure to get paid to chat with him while we still have him around.
I love that Lee’s response to marketing himself is “Do whatever the hell you want to do” He’s too busy to care about that shit. 🙂
Basically.
